Angels in Action is growing and we are making a difference for women and their families facing ovarian cancer and well women in our lives. Here’s the story about how we got started.
Angels in Action – Beginnings
In June of 1999 Fay Bisaillon was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was confident she would recover from this disease and make every effort to ensure other women remained free of ovarian cancer. Unfortunately Fay, only 43, died April 13, 2000.
The first year after her death Linda Laframboise (Fay’s sister) organized a dinner on March 30 (Fay’s birthday) to remember her and raise money for research into ovarian cancer and improved patient care. The seed was planted and the dinner became an annual event. Each year more women were remembered. Each year more men and women in our community wanted to be involved.
Curing Ovarian Cancer in Ottawa and the Region
In 2006 Angels in Action was formed. Volunteers joined together and agreed on a common vision – ‘Curing Ovarian Cancer in Ottawa and the Region’. The call went out to our community – Become an Angel in Action!
Since 2006 we’ve grown from organizing one fundraising event a year to three events in 2008! Many community organized events support us. Our number of volunteers and supporters continues to increase.
The Bi-annual Awards Dinner held November 2008 recognized women who had become Angels in Action by holding events on our behalf. In response to our 2008 Awards Dinner women with ovarian cancer have told us how pleased they are to see something happening in Ottawa.
In 2008 we raised $38,000, almost a 50% increase from 2006. Join us. Help cure ovarian cancer.
